站在下游企业的角度，用大白话来解释，VOI就是供应商的东西放在企业里来使用，等企业使用后，再给供应商做结算，在流通领域此种方式也称为“寄售”；站在下游企业的角度，此种方式也称为“代管”。VOI对于供应链的贡献，有点儿歪打正着，本来是供应商为了多卖货，而把货物先放在上游企业，供其生产之用，它反而推动了供应链模式的变革，减少了中间库存，增强了企业间的信息共享与协同。VOI这种方式一般出现在实力悬殊较大的两个企业之间，一般供应链的下游企业为两者中的核心企业，某些汽配企业、整车制造企业、家用电器企业等便采用了这种库存控制策略。 从供应链的角度讲，VOI有明显的优点。对于下游企业来讲，提高了供应商的供货及时率，基本为100%；提高了存货周转率，减少了库存资金占用；同时，对供应商群的稳定与提高服务反应速度等也有积极的推动作用。对于供应商来讲，清楚了在售产品的库存状况，使销售预测与计划的制定有了准确的依据；可以稳定客户群，增加销售额，降低物流成本，增加与客户的互动深度及配合紧密度，及时了解市场发展动向等。
